Tips to Slash Your Bills: Bread Recipe

Save hundreds per year by making your own bread

Make your own loaf of bread at about $1.31 per loaf with this simple recipe:

3 tsp yeast
¼ cup warm (100-110 degrees) water
3 cups white flour
4 cups wheat flour
4 tsp salt
4 TBSP butter (melted)
2 ¼ cups milk (not skim)
¼ cup honey

Mix yeast and water in a glass bowl. Allow to sit while you get the rest of the ingredients ready. This proofs the yeast – it will get bubbly.

Measure the flours and salt into a mixer bowl and mix gently. Add yeast and water and mix on low with the dough hook. Slowly add the butter, milk, and honey. The dough will begin to form a ball. Add a small amount of flour – about 2 TBSP at a time – until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and forms a ball. Pour onto a flour covered surface and knead until elastic. Place dough in large lightly oiled bowl and turn to coat. Cover and let rise for 2 hours or until double.

Punch the dough down, turn onto floured surface, separate into two portions, cover, and let rest for 10-15 minutes. Gently stretch dough until it is about twice the size of your bread pan. Fold in sides and pinch seams together. Place in greased bread pans and gently pat down with the back of your hand. Cover and let rise for an hour, or until dough is at the top of the bread pan.

Heat oven to 350. Brush tops of loaves with melted butter if desired. Bake for 30 minutes – bread should sound hollow when tapped. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack. Cool completely before slicing.
