St. Mary's County has installed cameras on their school buses to fight back against drivers who illegally pass stopped buses.
The system works by detecting when a vehicle is passing a school bus that has stopped and extended its "stop" arm. When a vehicle begins to pass, the camera snaps a picture of the front of the vehicle as well as the license plate.
Authorities review the image, and if the citation is approved, violators face a $125 fine.
Despite the relative severity of the offense, a caught-on-camera infraction is still considered a civil violation. If an offender is caught by an officer, the resulting penalty remains a $570 fine and a three point violation on their license.
The program has already seen success in Falls Church and Montgomery County, Md.
