One man was killed in a violent crash that left parts of a car scattered across a Northeast Washington road Wednesday morning.
Police say only one car was involved in the accident in the 1400 block of H Street NE.
Witnesses told News4's Molette Green that the driver was coming down H Street at a high rate of speed around 3:30 a.m. when he hit a pole and became airborne. He's been identified as 24-year-od Maurice Bobby Kirkland of Northwest.
"He lost control of the car and ended up hitting this pole down at the bottom of Florida Avenue. He landed right here, and the car burst into flames," one witness said.
Chunks of metal littered the road around the charred car. DDOT officials originally said the car exploded, but later sent a tweet calling the scene a crash.
