Trailing by seven points late in the fourth quarter, the Redskins turned to two of their most reliable players to pull ahead on a touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion.
Okay, it was fourth-string quarterback Pat White and undrafted rookie tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi, but it was good enough to lift Washington to a preseason-opening 22-21 victory over the Tennessee Titans Thursday.
With Robert Griffin III watching from the sideline in full uniform (and a bucket hat), his three fellow quarterbacks combined for the victory. Kirk Cousins began with a 6-for-7 performance, punctuated by a play-action touchdown pass to Fred Davis in the first quarter. Rex Grossman threw the second touchdown to Leonard Hankerson on a red-zone screen pass, while White rushed in from nine yards out with just under 2:30 remaining to cut the lead to 21-20 before the successful two-point conversion put the Redskins ahead for good.
Meanwhile, the defense had its issues, giving up big scoring plays to Chris Johnson on a 58-yard rush and Shonn Greene on a 19-yard run in the first quarter. Three rookies -- David Amerson, Bacarri Rambo and Phillip Thomas -- started in the secondary. Amerson, the team's second-round draft pick, performed admirably in his NFL debut, while Thomas did not finish his, leaving with a foot injury.
The Redskins return to action Aug. 19 against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedEx Field.
