Questions about the do-not-call list, does cancelling your credit cards affect your credit rating, how do you stop home delivery of YellowBook?

Ask Liz:3/6/09

Q: How can I stop home delivery of the YellowBook phone directory?

A: We called YellowBook to find your answer. It says you have to call 1-866-929-3556. The company will ask you why you want to stop delivery. And it will need your phone number and address to put you on its "do-not-deliver" list. Yellowbook says it will call you every two years to find out if you still do not want home delivery.

Q: Does cancelling a credit card does it affect your credit score?

A: We went to the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Washington to get this answer. It says closing unused credit cards can shorten a person's credit history. And that can result in a lower credit score. You can also harm your credit score if you have no credit history, meaning no credit cards or loans. Or if you rate shop because that will result in numerous credit inquiries, Or if you miss a payment by even one day, Or if you co-sign a loan.

Q: I want to know if anyone in a household can tell telemarketers to put the phone on the company's Do Not Call list or just the person who is being called?

A: We took this question to the Federal Trade Commission. It says anyone in the household can request placement on a company's do-not-call list. However, the phone's owner should also put the phone number on the Federal Do-Not-Call list. That website is donotcall.gov. Or you can register by phone at 1-888-382-1222.
