How You Can Help Puerto Rico: Events, Fundraisers in the DC Area

Life in Puerto Rico has been dire for many of the island nation's 3.4 million residents after Hurricane Maria hit on Sept. 20. Six days after the storm, most people still have no power or basic supplies.

"There is no water and practically no food," a woman trying to buy groceries in San Juan said Monday.

Here are some ways that people in the D.C. area can help:

  • The Puerto Rican Diaspora is hosting a happy hour on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garden at 1216 18th St. NW in D.C. Half of all proceeds from the rooftop patio will go directly toward relief efforts. Individual donations can be made here.
  • Friends of Puerto Rico is hosting a 5K race on Sunday to raise funds for displaced people. A donation of $25 or more will grant you entry to the race. The group is a nonprofit based in D.C. that funds cultural initiatives on the island.
  • An Amazon Wishlist has been created by United for Puerto Rico. Many items have already been purchased, but baby food, non-perishable items and first aid kits were still needed as of Tuesday afternoon. The organization is an initiative by First Lady of Puerto Rico Beatriz Rosselló.
  • The government of Puerto Rico has published a guide detailing how individuals and companies can help. The campaign requests that people donate and help raise awareness by using hashtags #UnidosPorPR, #UnitedForPR and #PrayForPuertoRico. You can donate directly to the fund here.
