Suspect Surrenders Following 10-Hour Standoff in SE

A man who barricaded himself inside a southeast Washington home for over 10 hours is now in police custody.

Officers tried to serve a warrant at the home in the 1300 block of East Capitol Street SE around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when the man refused to come outside. Police say the man was wanted for failing to appear in court after he allegedly assaulted an officer.

Police believed the suspect may have been armed, and a SWAT team and negotiator were eventually brought to the scene.

The man surrendered peacefully around 9 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

The barricade situation forced neighbors to stay inside of their homes until the area was cleared. Wednesday was a street cleaning day on 13th and South Capitol streets, so many residents who didn't move their cars got tickets, but the Department of Public Works said all of the tickets given near the barricade site will be voided.

"I mean, this can happen anywhere, any neighborhood," said resident Matt Aboyme.
