Another $7.5 Million Allocated for Silver Spring Transit Center

The Montgomery County Council approved an additional $7.5 million in funding Tuesday for the troubled Silver Spring Transit Center.

County Executive Ike Leggett asked for and received the funds to cover legal and consultant fees for the project.

But that won't be the last additional money sought for the project, which is well over budget and behind schedule. A recent study revealed structural problems with concrete and other construction material, and councilmembers anticipate that they will have to front more money to rebuild.

Tuesday, the council said that they would seek to recoup from the developer any additional costs that they had to spend.

The project was originally supposed to open in 2009 as a hub for Metro, MARC trains and buses. The latest figures -- before the new funds were added -- had the center costing $112 million.
