Odor in DC, Prince George's Is Not Natural Gas, Officials Say

Residents reported a strong odor in the area of Southern Avenue

Residents who awoke Saturday to a strong odor in parts of Prince George's County and D.C. are being told there is no hazardous natural gas leak.

D.C. Fire and EMS and Prince George's Fire Department each received reports of an odor in the area of Southern Avenue, which divides the District and Maryland. Reports were received between that street and Ritchie Road.

A junkyard in Prince George's that's near the district is emitting a smell that's similar to natural gas, D.C. Fire said. They say residents should not be alarmed and agencies and working to mitigate the smell.

Prince George's Fire is also investigating and says that Washington Gas confirmed there is no gas leak.

By Saturday afternoon, the smell reportedly had dissipated.
