Marine Reassigned After Shooting Death at DC Barracks

Lance Cpl. Riley Kuznia was shot and killed at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, the Marine Corps said in a statement

A guard at Marine Barracks Washington was reassigned after a fatal New Year’s Day shooting of another Marine.

A Marine guard fired his weapon, hitting Lance Cpl. Riley Kuznia, 20, of Karlstad, Minnesota, about 5 a.m. Tuesday inside the barracks at 8th and I streets in Southeast. Kuznia was taken to a hospital but pronounced dead at 5:59 a.m.

The Marine who fired his weapon was relieved of his guard duties and assigned to administrative duties pending the results of an investigation.

The Metropolitan Police Department is treating the shooting as a death investigation, not a homicide, according to the Marines.

"The safety and well-being of the Marines, Sailors and civilians here at the Barracks is paramount, and something we take very seriously," Marine Barracks Washington commanding officer Col. Don Tomich said in a press release.

Kuznia's decorations include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
