Man Charged With Shooting, Killing Father of Four in Southeast DC

A man has been arrested and charged for the shooting death of a father of four in Southeast D.C. earlier this year, police say.

Andrew McPhatter, 28, was gunned down in broad daylight on March 1 as he was driving on Wheeler Road SE about a block from his home. He died a few days later.

On Wednesday, police arrested 26-year-old Derek Turner, of Southeast, and charged him with first-degree murder while armed.

McPhatter worked construction during the day and went to school at night and spent the weekends with his children, his mother said.

"He was awesome," McPhatter's mother, Jessica Jackson, said at a vigil in March. "The person that did this...God gonna take care of that. He already can't sleep. He already can't eat. When he look in the mirror he sees my son."

Several other shootings happened on Wheeler Road the same week McPhatter was shot.
