Head of D.C. Child and Family Services Resigns

The director of the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency resigned after a court-appointed monitor delivered a mixed review of the agency's progress.

Roque Gerald's resignation is effective at the end of May, agency spokeswoman Mindy Good said.

Former Mayor Adrian Fenty appointed Gerald to head the agency in 2008, six months after the city discovered Banita Jacks had murdered her four daughters and left them decomposing in her southeast Washington home. Social workers at the agency were fired after the discovery for allegedly not adequately responding to a report of abuse months before the girls' bodies were discovered.

An inspector general's recent audit of the agency found flaws still remain three years after the Jacks deaths.

Gerald has been serving as interim director under Mayor Vincent Gray.
