Prince George's Hospital Center

Funeral to Be Held for 3-Year-Old Accidentally Shot by Brother

A funeral will be held Wednesday for the 3-year-old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by her 7-year-old brother in the District last week.

Visitation for Dalis Cox begins at 9 a.m. at New Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church on Douglas Street in Northeast. Her funeral will begin at 11 a.m.

Dalis was shot July 29 her mother's apartment on 46th Place and G Street SE. Police later confirmed that Dalis's brother fired the shot. Dalis was rushed to Prince George's Hospital Center, where she died.

No one has been charged in connection to the child's death.

"We have to figure out where the gun came from, how it got in the house," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said in the wake of the shooting. "If there's any criminal liability, someone will be charged."

Police say the gun used in the shooting was not registered in the District, making it illegal.

Dalis's devastated father, Timothy Cox, told News4 he dropped off his daughter at her mother's apartment the night of her death. Just 30 minutes later, he received a call telling him his child had been shot.

"I loved her with all my heart," he said. "It's tough to have a 3-year-old daughter just being taken."
