Father of 11-Month-Old Shot, Killed in Seat Pleasant

A promising basketball player and father-of-one was walking to a training session in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, when he was shot and killed in broad daylight.

Lamont Adair Jr., 23, died from his injuries at the scene Wednesday, police say.

Adair was set to leave next month for China, where the 6-foot-7-inch athlete was going to play. He was on his way to training when he was shot.

Prince George's County police responded to reports that several shots were fired just before 4 p.m., as children played outside in the neighborhood. When officers arrived at the 6600 block of Grieg Street, they found Adair suffering from gunshot wounds.

A bullet hole was also found in a car.

Adair lived nearby with his mother and was well-known in the neighborhood.

Police haven't detailed a possible motive, and heartbroken family members can't fathom who would attack Adair.

"He young. You can't trust young people," his sister said.

Dozens of community members were seen wiping tears from their eyes and comforting Adair's heartbroken mother.

"I feel pain. I gotta void in my heart because my son is not here," Adair's mother, Darlene Rainy, said. "This is ruthless."

She continued with a message for the shooter, wiping tears from her eyes: "Whatever coward did this, I hope you're caught. Turn yourself in."

Adair's family says he leaves behind an 11-month-old child.
