The D.C. Council is considering a bill that would lower some traffic camera fines.
Currently, drivers are paying as much as $250 if they get caught. The new proposal would charge varying fines depending on the severity of the infraction.
The most anybody would pay for speeding up to 20 mph over the limit, blocking the box, not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign or before turning right on red, and turning right on red when it isnβt allowed would be $50.
βThe enforcement of infractions actually has resulted in improved traffic safety outcome,β Mayor Vincent Gray said Wednesday. βSo thatβs the measure that I want to look at, and weβll work with the council on this legislation as it moves through.β
The bill does not address running red lights or speeding in excess of 20 mph over the speed limit.
The council also wants to add more speed cameras in the coming years.
Council member Mary Cheh's office said the bill could change after a public hearing Nov. 5.
