1 Dead, 4 Injured in Lorton Apartment Complex Fire

One person died and four firefighters were injured in a four-alarm fire at a garden-style apartment complex in Lorton, Virginia on Tuesday.

Fairfax Co. Firefighters responded to the 8200 block of Cat Bird Circle around 3 p.m. for a large fire at the complex.

Though the person who died hasn't been identified, News4's Jackie Bensen reports that neighbors were searching for a woman in her 30s they knew to have lived in the complex.

A visibly distraught man, identified as the woman's fiance, was led away from the scene by officials.

"The plume, the wind was pushing that fire," neighbor Suzanne Schaefer said. "I don't mean to be selfish, this woman died, but we're so lucky [to be OK]."

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries in the fire.

"We went to four alarms today because of the extensive fire and because of the number of rescues the firefighters had to make," said Fairfax County Fire Department Chief Richard Bowers.

Bowers said firefighters had to adjust from an interior search and rescue to an external one due to the force of the flames. Many residents were trapped on the higher floors and had to be rescued.

Chopper 4 spotted at least two floors fully engulfed in flames.

Dozens of people were displaced due to the fire. A cause has not yet been determined.
