ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- A 40-year-old Springfield man killed himself at the Alexandria jail just hours before his plea hearing, authorities said.
Guards found Don Douglas on Jan. 12 after he hanged himself in the shower, according to Alexandria sheriff's officials. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The incident was first reported in The (Washington) Examiner.
Court records show Douglas faced federal child pornography charges and was scheduled to plead guilty in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on the day he died. He was accused of taking explicit photos of a 15-year-old girl who he sexually abused.
The sheriff's office says It was the first suicide at the jail since it opened in 1987, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities are investigating.
