Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, the Archbishop of Washington, has been appointed to two different groups within the Vatican that advise the pope.
The church announced Wuerl's appointments on Wednesday. Wuerl will be one of fewer than three dozen cardinals that are members of the Congregation for Clergy, one of nine major Vatican departments that advise the pope. The Congregation for Clergy's responsibilities include overseeing the way the faith is taught in churches worldwide.
Wuerl will also be a part of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, which works to develop dialogue with other churches.
