Alexandria Man Wins $5 Million Lottery Prize With Spare Cash

An Alexandria man hoped to win the big Powerball jackpot, but wound up millions of dollars richer thanks to the scratch off ticket he bought with his leftover cash.

Kifle Solomon went to the Safeway at 5980 Kingstowne Center in Alexandria to buy his Powerball tickets for the big $750 million jackpot. Using his spare cash, he bought a 50X The Money ticket.

As it turned out, that last ticket was the lucky one for Solomon. He won the $5 million top prize.

"I couldn't believe my eyes!" Solomon said when he got his big check.

The odds of winning the top $5 million prize are 1 in 1,876,800. There's still one more unclaimed $5 million top prize unclaimed in the game, according to the Virginia Lottery.

Fairfax County received $31.2 million in lottery funds for K-12 education in the last fiscal year, the Virginia Lottery's release said.
