A Virginia man charged with conspiring to rob a jeweler as part of a plot to attack synagogues and black churches will remain in jail.
U.S. Magistrate Roderick Young in Richmond ruled Friday that 30-year-old Charles D. Halderman Jr. would be a flight risk and a threat to the community if he were released on bond.
The robbery conspiracy charge against Halderman now goes to a federal grand jury.
The FBI says in court papers that Halderman is an associate of two convicted felons who are charged with trying to illegally buy guns and explosives to shoot up or bomb houses of worship.
Those men, 34-year-old Robert C. Doyle and 33-year-old Ronald Beasley Chaney III, appeared in court Thursday and were ordered held without bond.
An affidavit said Doyle and Chaney are white supremacists. They allegedly tried to buy an automatic weapon, explosives and a pistol with a silencer from three undercover FBI agents posing as arms dealers Nov. 8.
The FBI says part of the plot was to rob a jeweler and use the money to finance a race war.
