Virginia Could Land Big Stimulus Bucks

$6 billion may be heading to the commonwealth

Nearly $6 billion from the federal stimulus package will pass through Virginia government.

Counting tax cuts and direct benefits the feds would pay to individuals, the House Appropriations Committee staff estimates that about $11 billion will flow to Virginia from the recovery package.

Members of the committee were told Friday that the biggest shares of the recovery packages will be earmarked for public schools, Medicaid and transportation.

Committee members grumbled that only about 10 percent of the total passing through state government can be used for infrastructure.

Too much of it goes directly into ongoing spending programs, but only for two years, according to Committee chairman Lacey Putney.
