A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a father of two who was standing or walking on Route 5 in Waldorf, Maryland, Tuesday morning, police say.

Aaron Rust, 34, died when a pickup truck driver struck him on southbound Route 5 in the area of Montgomery Lane just before 4 a.m., according to Maryland State Police.

Later Tuesday, Rust's family came to the scene of the crash to see it and to put up balloons in his memory.

Rust's mother, Elizabeth Rust, said her son was walking home.

"That's so sad that his life is gone," she said.

Surveillance video from a liquor store down the street captured an image of the truck, a Ford F350, state police said. The truck is white with front end damage, according to police.

"State police investigators found pieces of the vehicle that actually struck the pedestrian this morning. Those pieces that were collected from the scene come back to a 2017 2018 Ford F-350," Sgt. Davaughn Parker said.

Elizabeth Rust pleaded for the driver to come forward.

"If you know you did this, turn yourself in because he was a father, a son, an uncle, a cousin - and most of all, he was my son," she said.

    Rust fathered two boys.
