Heat Breaks Record

It's official. Today's high of 105 at 3:55 p.m. at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport has shattered the old record of 103 set in 1999. The record was first broken earlier today when the mercury hit 104 at 1:55 p.m. Officials caution people to stay out of the heat, drink plenty of fluids and tend to family and neighbors - especially those without air conditioning.

Wal-Mart in DC?

Fresh off a deal with the City of Chicago that will allow Wal-Mart Stores to open more than a dozen locations there, the mega-retailer is closing in on an agreement to open its first store in D.C. Wal-Mart is negotiating to open a store on New York Avenue NE near the intersection of Bladensburg Road, on a parcel owned by a family in the taxicab business, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. Cop Tries to Rob Bank

A former Prince George's County police officer admitted in federal court Tuesday that he attempted to steal cash from a bank last year, even bringing an electric saw that a partner used to try to cut open a safe. Eddie L. Smith Jr., 42, who had been on the county force for 16 years, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt to breaking into a bank with intent to commit felony larceny.
