The End of Free Bus Rides in Montgomery Co.

Council trying to close a budget gap, of course

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Montgomery County Council staff is proposing suspending free bus rides for seniors, the disabled and county students.

Seniors and the disabled would be charged 60 cents to ride on Metrobus and Ride On under the proposal being considered by the council on Tuesday. Students would buy $10 monthly passes for unlimited rides instead of being allowed to ride free on weekday afternoons.

Another proposal would raise the cost of monthly "parking convenience stickers" in the Bethesda business district from $95 to $140. Hourly rates for some short-term and long-term spaces would rise 25 cents an hour.

Council President Phil Andrews said the proposals show that the council is looking at a range of options to close a more than $500 million budget gap.
