At least three bars in Washington, D.C., have applied to allow sports betting in their establishments this fall.
Duffy's Irish Pub (1016 H Street NE), Wet Dog Tavern (2100 Vermont Ave. NW) and The Brig (1007 8th Street SE) all submitted applications to the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) to change their liquor licences and allow for sports betting.
"We hope to be able to offer as much sports betting opportunities that our patrons want and the licensing process allows," Duffy's owner Casey Callister told News4 in an email. "Sports betting will certainly add to the fun of watching sports at Duffy's Irish Pub!"
The bars will have to apply for betting licenses once the application process opens in August.
Since the D.C. Council approved sports betting in February, lawmakers have been working to fast-track what's expected to be a profitable industry for the District. Councilmembers recently defended the decision to bypass a bidding period and give the sports betting contract to Intralot, which runs the D.C. Lottery.
In-person sports betting at bars and venues like Nationals Park and Capital One Arena could start as soon as September.
Mobile betting is expected to be up and running by early next year.
