Man Shot, Car Crashes Outside Westfield Wheaton Mall

Driver and another passenger also taken to hospital

A passenger was shot inside a car that crashed outside a Maryland mall Wednesday evening.

Apparently, a dispute inside Westfield Wheaton mall spilled into the parking lot, where the shooting took place about 7 p.m. as the mall was busy with last-minute Thanksgiving shoppers.

“That’s certainly what detectives are looking into right now,” Montgomery County police Officer Rick Goodale said. “They’re attempting to review surveillance video from the various stores and talking with mall security to see what may have transpired inside the mall and also in the parking garage.”

A man in the front passenger seat of the car was shot. He was in serious condition.

The car crashed into a ballast in front of Dick's Sporting Goods. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue initially said the car crashed into a building.

The woman driving the car and a female passenger also were injured. They were taken to a hospital.

Police and mall security escorted customers around the crime scene to their cars.
