One Killed in Serious Crash in Bowie

Crash occurred on Route 197 approaching Route 50

One person died after a serious crash on Route 197 in Bowie early Friday morning.

Police tell News4 that an accident was reported just after 3 a.m. A man rear-ended and side-swiped another vehicle. The passenger in the vehicle that was struck, 21-year-old Anastasia Smith, has passed away. The driver of that vehicle was transported to an area hospital and is in critical, but stable condition.

Smith and a friend had been at TGI Friday's and were on their way home.

Their car was stopped at a red light when it was struck from behind by a car driven by a 27-year-old Bowie man and pushed into the intersection.

News4’s Tracee Wilkins reported that both the northbound and southbound lanes on Route 197 near Route 50 were closed earlier due to a serious crash in the area. Crews worked to get the northbound lane opened fairly quickly, and both lanes are clear at this point in time.

The investigation surrounding the crash is still ongoing. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

Charges are pending in the case.
