A community event that was close to Marion Barry's heart will be held Monday, exactly one year since his death.
The former mayor's annual turkey giveaway will be held at Malcolm X Elementary School. Nearly 3,000 Ward 8 residents have pre-registered for the event. Those who haven't pre-registered can still get a turkey; they just have to show proof of residency.
Barry died last November of natural causes due to heart problems. He was 78 years old.
Last year, volunteers gave away more than 3,000 turkeys and 40,000 pounds of fresh vegetables to needy families in the community.
The turkey giveaway was held from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The free turkeys were given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Monday night, Mayor Muriel Bowser will announce recommendations for how to honor Barry at a reception in southeast Washington. Barry's widow, Cora Masters Barry, and other friends, relatives and former colleagues are scheduled to attend.
