Plane Lands at National With Engine in Flames

Officials for U.S. Airways and National Airport confirmed that a flight that landed on Saturday evening was experiencing mechanical difficulties -- including an engine that erupted in flames.

U.S. Airways flight 1764, flying from Charlotte to National, landed at about 7:00 p.m. last night. The captain declared an emergency upon landing, as a mechanical problem of an unknown nature had emerged.

NBC Washington viewer Ann Minks captured a photo of the flight showing the problem engine.

A Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokesperson said that the plane landed normally. A fire department crew escorted the plane as it taxied to its gate, about five minutes after landing. No airport operation were affected by the landing.

A spokesperson for U.S. Airways says that maintenance is investigating the problem.
