Man Hit, Killed by Bus on National Mall

A pedestrian has died after he was hit by a bus on the National Mall, officials say.

The man was hit at 14th Street and Madison Drive NW, steps from the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History.

The victim was pinned under a rear wheel of a commuter bus, a D.C. fire department representative said.

Medics responded about 4:45 p.m., but the man already had died.

The bus involved in the crash was operated by the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC), which serves Prince William County.

"PRTC expresses its deepest condolences to the pedestrian’s family," the company said in a statement.

No passengers on the bus were hurt.

Traffic is shut down in both directions on 14th Street between Constitution Avenue and Madison Drive.

Police were talking with the driver about what happened.

The area is often crowded with locals and tourists.
