Pedestrian Carlos Pacanins Struck, Killed in College Park

A man was fatally injured when he was hit by a car in College Park, Prince George’s County police said.

Carlos Pacanins, 23, of Chevy Chase, Md., was trying to cross Baltimore Avenue about 10:20 p.m. Friday when he was hit by a car, officers said. The driver remained at the scene, authorities said.

Pacanins died of his injuries Sunday, police said. He was walking in or near a crosswalk, but a “Don't Walk” signal was flashing. Police also believe Pacanins was drinking.

Pacanins was a senior close to graduating from George Washington University.

His death is the third in that area, near the University of Maryland, since last summer, but police do not believe that stretch of road is dangerous. Instead, the high volume of pedestrian traffic combined with pedestrians often not following crosswalk signals leads to accidents.
