PD: Children Kidnapped by Mother Located

Police: Cruelty to children investigation still open

After a mother took her two boys from a hospital without the knowledge of staff, Children's National Medical Hospital in D.C. is reviewing its procedures.

The two young boys, aged 5 and 10, were taken around 4 p.m. Thursday from the hospital on Michigan Avenue NW. They had been hospitalized earlier that day by Child Protective Services for reports of neglect and abuse.

Police said their mother, 27-year-old Mikisha Funderburk grabbed the boys from the hospital and ran. All three were found later that evening in Rockville, Md.

A hospital spokesperson told News4 the boys had not been checked in at the time they were abducted, but once their social worker alerted hospital security, they chased Mikisha Funderburk but were not able to catch up with her. Officials also said the boys had not been picked up from their mother's home.

Investigators have not commented on what charges Mikisha Funderburk may face. The case is still being reviewed, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
