Montgomery County Urges Suburban Hospital to Alter Expansion

A Montgomery County hearing examiner says Suburban Hospital in Bethesda should revamp its planned expansion because portions of the proposal would have an "adverse impact" on the surrounding neighborhood.

Suburban wants to spend $200 million to add 240,000 square feet and 66 beds, giving it a total of about 300.

The report by hearing examiner Francoise Carrier was issued late Friday. It says Suburban's plans don't mesh with county plans to maintain a residential feel along Old Georgetown Road.

The county's five-member Board of Appeals could either accept Carrier's recommendations or come up with a plan of its own.

Suburban's expansion has already been approved by the county's Planning Board.
