A boy found his older brother and his mother murdered inside their Dale City, Va., home on Friday. Authorities said the son found dead had come home from college for the holidays.
Police identified the victims as 39-year-old Jeane Smith and 19-year-old James Smith. The slain teen was a student at James Madison University.
The younger sibling called 911 after he discovered his brother in one room of their home in the 13600 block of Langford Court Friday afternoon, according to police. Officers found the mother in a separate room when they arrived. Sources said both victims appeared to have gunshot wounds.
Police said there were no signs of a break-in or robbery at the house. The murders left authorities baffled about a possible motive.
"This a quiet neighborhood, relatively speaking," said Prince William County Police Major Ray Colgan. "This is not a family we've ever had contact with in a negative way."
