Maryland State Police and the Frederick County Farm Bureau are teaming up to let troopers hunt crop-eating deer.
The Frederick News-Post reported Monday that the program is aimed at reducing deer herds on farmland. But any private landowner can get involved.
The state agency said it will link a trooper who wants to hunt with a landowner who wants to have deer hunted.
Mount Airy farmer Lisa Gaver welcomes the arrangement. She said deer damage costs farmers a lot of money.
Project coordinator Michael Brady of the Maryland State Police said he hopes the program can be expanded to neighboring Washington and Montgomery counties. The long-term goal is to make it statewide, he said.
