Man Pleads Guilty to Dragging Police Officer 100 Yards With Car

The officer suffered a broken thigh and needed extensive surgery

A Maryland man pleaded guilty to dragging a Prince George's County Police officer with his car.

The county State's Attorney's Office said in an email that 27-year-old Danny Harvell of Temple Hills pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault.

Prosecutors said on July 15, 2015, an officer approached Harvell in a car in District Heights and smelled marijuana.

When the officer reached into the car, Harvell drove off, and the officer's arm got tangled in the seat belt, police said. The officer was dragged about 100 yards before the car hit a tree and rolled onto the officer.

Prosecutors said the officer, whose thigh was broken, had to undergo extensive surgery.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 25.
