A man was arrested weeks after police say he shot at a D.C. officer on the Fourth of July.
D.C. police arrested 44-year-old Jeffrey Mcilwain, of Hyattsville, Maryland, on Tuesday.
The suspect was walking a dog in the 4600 block of Hillside Road SE at about 3:50 a.m. on July 4 when he passed the officer and said "F--- you," D.C. police said.
About five minutes later, the man crouched behind a tree and shot at the on-duty officer several times, police said. Then, he ran into an alley.
The officer was not hurt.
Mcilwain was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
Police say the community gave tips that helped them find the suspect.
