Howard Co. Officer, 2 Others Injured in Crash

Car struck officer and man he was taking into custody

Three people, including a Howard County police officer, have been hospitalized after being injured a crash in Mt. Airy early Sunday morning.

The incident happened shortly before 2:00 a.m. The officer has been identified as 43-year-old Richard Romberger Jr., while the other two injured people have been identified as 27-year-old Matthew Griffis of Clarksburg and 25-year-old Ricky Epperson of Mt. Airy.

Investigators say that Romberger had just taken Griffis into custody after the latter man left the scene of an earlier wreck on Penn Shop Road. The two were standing in the eastbound lane of Route 144 near Griffith Road when Epperson approached the scene in his 2000 Volvo S-70. Police say that Epperson failed to stop his car, instead clipping the front of a parked State Police car, hitting a Howard County patrol car, and striking Romberger and Griffis.

All three men were airlifted to hospitals in Frederick and Baltimore. No details of the men's condition or injuries was immediately available.
