Drivers in Howard County, Md., may soon be issued speeding tickets by mail if one county lawmaker gets his way.
Howard County State Sen. James Robey plans to introduce a bill that would allow the county to install speed cameras next year.
The camera technology will save lives, including those of police officers, Robey said. One officer was struck and killed last year while trying to flag down a speeding driver.
If the legislation passes, it would make Howard the second Maryland county with speed cameras. They're already authorized in Montgomery County, where violations caught on camera carry $40 fines.
Legislation that would have authorized speed cameras statewide failed in Annapolis this year because of differences in bills that cleared the Senate and the House of Delegates.
