How Much Are Mayor's Bike Rides Costing You?

Officers paid for full days of work

District taxpayers are going an extra mile to pay for Mayor Adrian Fenty's police escorts during his bike rides.

From January 2007 to June 2008, District officers were paid for at least 178 man-hours to keep an eye on the mayor during his rides, and dozens of officers were paid for a full day of work for following the mayor's two-hour rides, according to the Washington Examiner.

The protection from these officers is not included in the monitoring provided by full-time officers already paid to guard Fenty -- even on bike rides, the paper reported.

Fenty is an avid outdoorsman, often going on bike rides and runs in the District.  He usually runs in the National Marathon each year.

The District's police union sued to make the documents public, according to the Examiner.
