University employees among Maryland's highest-paid state workers

You know how often wish you were back in college? Here’s another little factoid that’ll make you long for your university days: most Maryland state employees who earn as much or more than Gov. Martin O’Malley work for the University System of Maryland.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the 15 best-paid state workers are employed by the university system. That includes former University of Maryland men’s basketball coach Gary Williams. He was the highest-paid state employee, bringing in $2.3 million last year. That salary included media appearances, camps, and other incentives.

Second on the list was former University of Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen, who earned $1.1 million in 2010. Brenda Frese, the Maryland women’s basketball coach, was the third highest-paid employee. She made just under $1 million.

You don’t have to be a great coach, though, to earn a great salary. Many of the state’s top earners are physicians in leadership positions at the university.

And in case you’re interested in becoming a governor someday, Gov. O’Malley earned $150,000 last year. In fact, some of his cabinet members actually earned more than he did.
