Arriving flights at Dulles Airport were delayed by more than an hour Saturday afternoon due to high winds.

A ground stop for all arriving traffic was put into effect at 10:44 a.m. Saturday, and average delays of 1 hour and 19 minutes for some arriving flights were being reported shortly after noon. There were no reports of ground stops or delays at the region's other two major airports.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for the entire D.C. area until 5 p.m. Saturday. The warning called for winds out of the northwest between 25 and 40 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour. The fastest gusts of wind were expected to die down by 4 p.m.

The weekend before Christmas is generally one of the busiest travel periods of the year. AAA expects 5.6 million people to travel by air over the Christmas/New Year's period.
