Hats, Hoods & Sunglasses OK… Sort Of

CALIFORNIA, Md. -- A credit union in St. Mary's County has stopped enforcing its "no hats, hoods or sunglasses" policy while officials try to figure out how to apply it fairly.

Employees at the Navy Federal Credit Union in California, Md., are no longer to approach customers wearing any of the aforementioned items, according to an internal memo obtained by The Washington Post. However, that same memo says the signs banning the attire will remain.

The change will allow officials to determine what kind of training is needed to make sure their new policy is implemented consistently, said Tom Lyons, a senior V.P. for the credit union.

This comes just a week after employees asked to serve a Muslim woman wearing a headscarf in the back room. The woman, Kenza Shelley, of Lexington Park, had been a customer at that branch for 10 years.

Lyons says the workers acted inappropriately because she was clearly identifiable as the scarf only covers her hair. The credit union has since apologized to Shelley.
