Do These HOV Lanes Seem Crowded to You?

Hundreds snared in HOV crackdown

Local and state police in Virginia and Maryland patrolled state roads in search of high occupancy lane scofflaws Wednesday and found them. About 700 citations were issued, officials said.

The patrols took place during morning and evening rush hours along the Dulles Toll Road, as well as interstates 66, 95 and 395 in Virginia. In Maryland, the dragnet happened along interstates 270 and 495.

In addition, officers and troopers cited nine drivers for reckless driving and another 68 for speeding.

Hundreds of other motorists received citations or warnings for other offenses, such as inspection violations and expired registrations.

The traffic safety effort brought together patrols from Maryland State Police, Virginia State Police, Arlington County police, Fairfax County police and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police.
