DC Teen Arrested in Murder of Ballou High School Student

A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested in the murder of a 15-year-old high school student in Southeast D.C., police say.

Daquan Gray was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ballou High School student Jaylyn Wheeler. Gray has been charged as an adult.

Wheeler was fatally shot May 16 on the 600 block of Alabama Avenue SE. Police were investigating whether the shooting could be related to a fight at school.

D.C. police had announced a warrant for Gray on Tuesday and said he was likely armed and dangerous.

In a post published on Twitter, John Hayden Johnson Middle School remembered Wheeler, a former student, as "funny, smart, and charismatic."

Included in the post was a photo of Wheeler smiling widely as he held a drawing adorned with a blue ribbon.

"His passing will deeply impact our community for days, months, and years to come," the school said.
