A Franconia police officer shot and killed a man wielding a knife in Springfield on Friday evening.
Police responded to an initial report of a stabbing at the Virginia Tire and Auto store at 6626 Backlick Road.
A responding officer located a man nearby on the 6500 block of Amherst Avenue, matching the description of the stabbing suspect. When the officer challenged the man, he brandished a knife and came towards him, Franconia police said. The officer then drew his weapon and shot the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency services transported a man from the tire store who had been stabbed to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The deceased has been identified as 49-year-old Joseph Anthony Croft, of Calamo Street, Springfield.
The officer involved in the shooting, a 15-year veteran, has been put on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues.
