    DC Police Officer Shoots, Kills Man in Southeast

    A man died Tuesday after being shot by a police officer, D.C. police say. News4's Meagan Fitzgerald reports. (Published Tuesday, June 12, 2018)

    D.C. police shot and killed a man in Southeast D.C. Tuesday night after police say the man pulled out a gun as he ran from officers.

    The name of the man was not immediately released. 

    Three uniformed patrol officers turned onto an alley near 1st Street and Wayne Place SE about 7 p.m. Tuesday and came across a group of men, D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said at a news conference.

    The men ran away when they spotted the officers, police said in a statement. Officers pursued them.

    Witnesses captured the moments after a police officer in Silver Spring shot and killed an unarmed man. Police say the man assaulted the officer. News4's Darcy Spencer reports.

    During the chase, one of the men pulled out a gun, police said. An officer fired and struck the man, police said.

    "From what I heard, out my window, it was no exchange of gunfire," Michael Brown, who lives nearby, said. "It was just straight up brrrrrp."

    "There was no crossfire," another witness told News4. She asked to remain anonymous.

    The man shot was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. 

    No one else was injured.

    Officers who responded activated their body cameras, and the footage is under review, police said.

    The shooting comes one day after Montgomery County police shot an unarmed man who allegedly attacked an officer. Robert Lawrence White, 41, died from his injuries.

    Police ask anyone with information to contact them.
