Book Retuned to Arlington Library 3 Decades Late

Book may be library's most overdue

ARLINGTON, Va. -- A former northern Virginia woman has returned what might be the Arlington County Library's tardiest book.

Jimmy Carter was in the White House and Dick Cavett was on late night TV when Sarah McKee borrowed a book about American Indian leaders on March 16, 1978.

The book, Alvin M. Josephy's "The Patriot Chiefs," somehow got mixed in with McKee's own collection.

Recently, McKee opened the book in her Amherst, Mass., home and realized her mistake.

She promptly sent it back with a $25 check.

McKee is a trustee of her local library and faults her spotty memory for the mix-up. The 70-year-old retired lawyer said she once bought a book on how to have a perfect memory but discovered she already owned a copy.
