Blog Posts Cause Former DC Mayor to Reconsider Society App

Order of Malta prez says incomplete info unfair to Williams and sponsors

Washington -- Former D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams has withdrawn an application to join a Catholic service society, and it's likely that the blogosphere played a role in his decision.

Members of the Order of Malta complained that because Williams supports abortion rights and protections for gay unions, he should not be allowed to join the group.  Williams's critics used Internet blogs to voice their concerns.

Noreen Falcone, the historic Catholic order's president, said that rather than bring their concerns to the Board of Directors, certain members anonymously posted incomplete information on Internet sites, which was unfair to Williams and his sponsors.

Among the organization's members are U.S. lawmakers who give time and money to charities.
