Bicyclist Fatally Struck by WSSC Truck in Gaithersburg

A bicyclist was fatally struck by a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) truck in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Monday morning.

Police say the man collided with the truck as it attempted to turn left on a green light into a shopping center in the 12100 block of Darnestown Road about 9:45 a.m. The intersection is located near Quince Orchard High School.

"At this time, we believe that the truck was traveling westbound on Route 28, attempting to make a left-hand turn into that shopping center. The adult male cyclist was traveling in a lane of travel; they collided in the intersection near that shopping center," explained Rebecca Innocenti with the Montgomery County Police Department.

The bicyclist, 60-year-old Andrew Gerard Malizio of Gaithersburg, died at the scene.

Investigators say the driver of the striking vehicle, 52-year-old John Phillip Kline of Hagerstown, stayed at the scene. WSSC had no comment regarding the accident as of Monday morning, News4's Chris Gordon reported.
